Physical Planning Department
The Physical Planning Department is responsible for providing architectural, engineering, and infrastructural oversight that ensures senior secondary schools across Nigeria are built, maintained, and upgraded to national safety and functionality standards. It develops master plans, school facility guidelines, and construction standards that guide states, local governments, and development partners in delivering quality school infrastructure.
By integrating modern design principles with sustainability and inclusivity considerations, the Department creates learning environments that inspire students and facilitate effective teaching.
To plan, design, supervise, and regulate the physical development and maintenance of senior secondary school facilities across Nigeria, ensuring that all school infrastructure meets approved national standards for safety, functionality, accessibility, and environmental sustainability.

School Infrastructure Planning
Develops national master plans and infrastructure development strategies for senior secondary schools, identifying facility gaps and prioritising investments across states and geopolitical zones.
Architectural Design & Standards
Prepares and approves standard architectural designs, building specifications, and construction guidelines for classrooms, laboratories, libraries, and other school facilities.
Construction Supervision
Provides technical supervision of school construction and renovation projects funded by the federal government or development partners, ensuring compliance with approved designs and specifications.
Facility Condition Assessment
Conducts systematic assessments of the physical condition of senior secondary school facilities to identify maintenance needs, structural risks, and upgrade priorities.
Safety & Accessibility Compliance
Ensures that all school buildings meet national building codes, fire safety regulations, and accessibility standards for students and staff with disabilities.
Sustainability & Green School Design
Promotes the integration of renewable energy, water conservation, and environmentally sustainable design principles into the planning and construction of school facilities.
Bill of Quantities & Cost Estimation
Prepares detailed bills of quantities, cost estimates, and tender documents for school construction and rehabilitation projects to support procurement and budget planning.
Maintenance Policy & Planning
Develops national school facilities maintenance policies and provides technical guidance to states and school administrators on preventive and corrective maintenance programmes.

National School Infrastructure Assessment Programme
A comprehensive periodic survey of the physical condition of senior secondary school facilities across Nigeria, generating data to guide targeted rehabilitation and new construction investments.
Standard School Design & Construction Initiative
A programme developing and disseminating standardised, cost-effective architectural designs for senior secondary schools that can be adapted to various geographies and climatic zones.
Green Schools Initiative
A sustainability-focused programme promoting the design and retrofitting of school facilities with solar energy, rainwater harvesting, and eco-friendly materials to reduce environmental footprint.
Inclusive School Environments Programme
